Fire Equipment Training for You and Your People – It’s the Law

Besides being a prudent measure to protect your people and company records, data and equipment, fire equipment training is also mandated by law if you have fire extinguishers on your premise. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Code of Federal Regulations, you are mandated to provide fire equipment training.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(g)
“Where the employer has provided portable fire extinguishers for employee use in the workplace, the employer shall also provide an educational program to familiarize employees with the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with incipient stage fire fighting.”

Failure to do so exposes your business to OSHA penalties and possibly provides grounds for lawsuits against you. Many insurance policies encourage (through discounts) or mandate fire equipment training programs. Check with your insurance carrier for details. Being prepared is the answer. What you do in the first minute of a fire’s outbreak can mean the difference between a small incident and a major catastrophe. The expression “seconds count” is never more true than in a fire emergency. Studies have shown that when an individual is properly trained on the use of fire extinguishers, they are 2 1/2 times more effective when extinguishing a fire.
You say you and your staff will evacuate, instead of fight a fire? Well consider the following: You or your staff may need to:

  • Fight your way through a fire to an exit.
  • Fight your way through a fire to an injured employee.
  • Defend in place, until help arrives.
  • Extinguish the burning clothes of a fellow employee.

Our training programs cover all of these situations.
Illinois Fire & Safety Company offers a variety of types of training programs to prepare your staff for a fire and one specialized trainnig program for fire and safety professionals:

Five Programs From Which To Choose

We offer five different “live-fire” fire equipment training courses to meet your needs from basic to most advanced. Each training course is offered at your facility (we bring everything necessary) and is conducted by trained fire-prevention professionals. The courses are designed to teach your employees the skills they’ll need to protect themselves and your property in the event of a fire.

ONE ALARM – Basic Training Discussion

One of our instructors will first gather one of each of the various types of fire extinguishers present on your premises to use as props. He will then talk with attendees – usually about 20 at a time – about the differences between each of the types of fire extinguishers and specifically how to effectively operate each one.
Our basic training discussion takes about 15-20 minutes total, depending on the number of types of fire extinguishers in use and the questions asked.

TWO ALARM – Classroom Training

An experienced instructor will conduct an indepth power point trainnig presentation for your staff. The training usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the types of fire extinguishers in use in your facilities.
The sessions are constructed to briefly cover all of the subjects mentioned below. There is also time allotted during the classroom session curriculum to cover your company’s procedures for fire protection that are not already covered.

Classroom session addresses some or all of the following:

  • Understanding fire and fire extinguishment
  • Identification of Fire Hazards in the workplace
  • Classifications of fire
  • Types of extinguishers
  • Recognize when it is safe to fight a fire and when to flee
  • Extinguishing techniques for using each type of fire extinguisher in your facilities
  • Extinguishing techniques for using fire hose in your facilities
  • Extinguishing special types of fires
  • Fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance
  • Fire Safety while at Work – Review of your procedures

Documentation and individual training certificates are provided for your training records and this training satisfies OSHA’s training requirements.
Your employees, collectively, are instructed on how to use a fire extinguisher.

THREE ALARM – Classroom and Indoor Simulator Training

Our simulator provides realistic training in the comfort of your conference room. Appropriate for both veterans and first-time operators, its patented design provides a complete fire training center in a 160 sq. ft. (15 m2) area. All components are matched to provide maximum performance with minimal set-up time.

  • No Fuel or Chemical … provides big savings with no cleanup and zero environmental impact.
  • Day or Night, Rain or Shine … never worry about canceling or rescheduling.
  • Efficient … train up to 200 students/day on 1 fire…or 150 students/day on 2 fires.
  • OSHA Compliant … meets the requirements of OSHA regulation 1910.157G for interior incipient fire training.
  • Flexible … we can customize the fire scenarios to simulate your hazard areas using a digital camera. Use stored-pressure or cartridge-operated extinguishers.

Documentation and individual training certificates are provided for your training records and this training satisfies OSHA’s training requirements.

FOUR ALARM – Classroom and Live Propane Fire Prop Training

Students fight a real propane fire using fire extinguishers with effectiveness sensors.  This is a completely controlled and clean fire that enables your employees to get a real feel for the correct way to extinguish a fire!

A burn permit is required to conduct this training, so please allow approximately 3 weeks lead time when scheduling to obtain the permit. Please note that this outdoor training is dependent upon weather conditions; inclement weather (snow, significant rain, high winds, lightning, etc.) may necessitate rescheduling of the training session.

Documentation and individual training certificates are provided for your training records.  This training satisfies OSHA’s training requirements.

FIVE ALARM – Classroom and Live Hydrocarbon Fire Prop Training

We can provide “live-fire” training utilizing hydrocarbon fuel props for up to twenty five people at a time and including OSHA documentation.  This course is designed for those businesses with a vital need for fire equipment training.  It provides the most challenging training, since students use actual fire extinguishing agent on large, challenging fires. This training satisfies OSHA’s requirements.

A burn permit is required to conduct this training, so please allow approximately 3 weeks lead time when scheduling for us to obtain the permit. Please note that this outdoor training is dependent upon weather conditions; inclement weather (snow, significant rain, high winds, lightning, etc. may necessitate rescheduling of the training session).

Documentation and individual training certificates are provided for your training records.  This training satisfies OSHA’s training requirements.

FIRE HOSE TRAINING

We can provide your staff with hands-on training with occupant-use fire hose.   Each participant will learn how to deploy and activate a fire hose and to effectively use the adjustable nozzle to accomplish protection and extinguishment.
